What is Gongkwon Yusul?
Gongkwon Yusul (공권유술), meaning “Art of Free Fist”, is a modern Korean martial art founded in 1996 by Kang Jun. It was created as a comprehensive system of striking and grappling, designed to blend traditional Korean martial principles with modern combat sports.
The art includes:
- Striking (punches, kicks, elbows, knees)
- Throws and takedowns
- Joint locks and submissions
- Ground fighting (similar to BJJ/Judo)
Unlike older Korean arts, Gongkwon Yusul was built with modern mixed martial arts logic, making it a bridge between traditional and contemporary combat.
Why Train Gongkwon Yusul?
- Balanced System – striking + grappling + submissions.
- Modern Approach – realistic training for today’s needs.
- Safe but Effective – structured for sport and self-defense.
- Dynamic Training – combines flow drills and sparring.
- Unique Identity – distinct from Taekwondo or Hapkido.
How Does Gongkwon Yusul Compare?
- Vs Taekwondo – more grappling, less sport kicking.
- Vs Hapkido – both include locks and throws, but Gongkwon Yusul integrates ground fighting.
- Vs MMA – similar mix, but Gongkwon Yusul has a Korean martial art framework.
- Vs Judo/BJJ – Gongkwon Yusul includes these elements but adds striking.
