Nunchaku(-do)

Nunchaku(-do)

What is Nunchaku(-do)?

Nunchaku(-do) is the modern martial art based on the nunchaku, a traditional Okinawan weapon made of two sticks connected by a chain or cord. While historically part of Okinawan Kobudo, the modern sport Nunchaku-do was formalized in Europe in the 1980s, especially in the Netherlands.

It includes kata, freestyle, and sparring with foam-padded nunchaku for safety.

Why Train Nunchaku(-do)?

  • Dynamic Weapon – fast, fluid movements.
  • Sportive Structure – safe competition rules.
  • Creativity & Expression – freestyle elements.
  • Coordination & Reflexes – trains speed and timing.
  • European Origin – martial art developed in Europe.

How Does Nunchaku-do Compare?

  • Vs Kobudo – Kobudo uses nunchaku as one of many weapons; Nunchaku-do specializes in it.
  • Vs Eskrima – both use sticks, but Nunchaku adds chain/cord dynamics.
  • Vs Karate – Karate is unarmed; Nunchaku is weapon-focused.
