Sambo
What is Sambo?
Sambo (самбо) is a Russian martial art and combat sport created in the 1920s–30s for the Soviet military. Its name is an acronym for “Self-Defense Without Weapons”.
It combines throws, takedowns, and submissions, influenced by Judo, wrestling, and traditional Russian fighting styles. Two main versions exist: Sport Sambo (similar to Judo but with leg locks) and Combat Sambo (includes strikes, close to MMA).
Why Train Sambo?
Effective Grappling – throws, locks, and ground control.
Two Versions – sport focus or combat focus.
Competition Pathway – strong international presence.
Self-Defense – practical techniques with military roots.
Physical Fitness – explosive training style.
How Does Sambo Compare?
Vs Judo – Sambo allows leg locks, Judo doesn’t in competition.
Vs BJJ – BJJ more ground-oriented, Sambo blends throws and submissions.
Vs MMA – Combat Sambo is close to MMA, but with more grappling emphasis.
Sambo in Europe
Strong in Eastern Europe and Russia, Sambo has also spread west thanks to MMA. Countries like Georgia, Moldova, and Russia dominate international competitions, but Western European clubs are growing steadily.
