Sibpalgi
What is Sibpalgi?
Sibpalgi (십팔기), literally “Eighteen Techniques”, is a traditional Korean martial art that combines unarmed striking with training in a wide range of classical weapons. Its origins lie in the Muye Dobo Tongji (1790), a military manual that documented Korea’s martial heritage.
What makes Sibpalgi unique is the breadth of weapons: practitioners learn tools such as the long sword (geom), staff (bong), spear (chang), trident (dangpa), and flail (pyeongon), alongside hand strikes and kicks. This makes it one of the most complete traditional martial systems still practiced today.
Why Train Sibpalgi?
Extensive Weapons Training – multiple traditional arms in one system.
Authentic Tradition – direct link to Korea’s martial history.
Versatility – combines weapons with striking techniques.
Cultural Value – rooted in historical manuals.
Unique in Europe – far less common than Taekwondo or Karate.
How Does Sibpalgi Compare?
Vs Kendo/Iaido – Sibpalgi includes many weapons, not just the sword.
Vs Haedong Kumdo – broader than Kumdo, which focuses solely on the sword.
Vs HEMA – similar historical preservation, but Korean instead of European.
Vs Taekwondo – not a sport; older, broader heritage.
Sibpalgi in Europe
While rare compared to other Korean arts, Sibpalgi is taught in specialized schools across Europe, usually within organizations preserving traditional martial systems.
