Subak
What is Subak?
Subak (수박) is an ancient Korean martial art dating back to the Goguryeo Kingdom (37 BC – 668 AD). Historical records describe it as a striking art involving open-hand techniques, punches, and kicks.
Although Subak largely declined and influenced later arts like Taekkyeon and Taekwondo, some modern groups attempt to reconstruct it as a cultural martial art.
Why Train Subak?
- Historical Heritage – one of Korea’s oldest martial arts.
- Striking Techniques – foundation for later Korean systems.
- Cultural Study – practiced as a living history project.
- Unique Identity – rare and little-known.
- Martial Exploration – interesting for martial arts historians.
How Does Subak Compare?
- Vs Taekkyeon – Taekkyeon survived as a living art, Subak is more reconstructed.
- Vs Karate/Taekwondo – Subak is older, simpler, less codified.
- Vs Sibpalgi – Subak is striking-based, Sibpalgi is weapons-focused.
Subak in Europe
Subak is rare in Europe, usually practiced within historical martial arts groups or Korean cultural organizations.
