What is Sumo?

Sumo (相撲) is Japan’s national sport and an ancient form of wrestling. Wrestlers (rikishi) compete in a ring (dohyō), aiming to force the opponent out or make them touch the ground with any part other than the feet.

It combines sheer size and strength with ritual and Shinto traditions, making it both sport and cultural performance.

Why Train Sumo?

  • Unique Wrestling Style – explosive power and balance.
  • Cultural Depth – deeply tied to Japanese rituals.
  • Strength & Fitness – builds explosive movement.
  • Rare in Europe – niche but fascinating.
  • Spectator Appeal – one of the most iconic martial arts.

How Does Sumo Compare?

  • Vs Wrestling/Judo – similar grappling, but unique rules and culture.
  • Vs Glima/Schwingen – all folk wrestling traditions.
  • Vs Sambo – Sumo is ritualized, Sambo is combat sport.
