Systema
What is Systema?
Systema (Система), meaning “the system”, is a Russian martial art with roots in military training. Unlike most martial arts, Systema does not use fixed forms or kata. Instead, it emphasizes natural movement, breathing, and adaptability.
Practitioners train to stay relaxed under stress, using fluid strikes, controls, and body mechanics to neutralize threats. Its philosophy is about survival, efficiency, and awareness rather than competition.
Why Train Systema?
- Unique Approach – no fixed techniques, focus on adaptability.
- Breathing & Relaxation – manage stress and fear.
- Practical Self-Defense – real-life applications.
- Holistic Training – body awareness, posture, movement.
- Appeals to Professionals – used in military and law enforcement.
How Does Systema Compare?
- Vs Krav Maga – both focus on self-defense, Systema is softer and more fluid.
- Vs Aikido – both use redirection, but Systema is less structured.
- Vs MMA – MMA is sport-based, Systema is survival-focused.
Systema in Europe
Systema spread outside Russia in the 1990s, with schools in the UK, Germany, and Eastern Europe. It remains niche but has a loyal following, especially among practitioners seeking alternatives to traditional martial arts.
