Tai Chi

What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi (Taijiquan, 太极拳) is a Chinese internal martial art combining slow, flowing movements with martial applications. The name Taijiquan means “Supreme Ultimate Fist”.

Developed in the 17th century, it is rooted in Taoist philosophy and Yin-Yang principles. While Tai Chi is widely known today for health and meditation, its origins lie in martial practice, including striking, joint locks, and push-hands (tui shou).

Why Train Tai Chi?

  • Health Benefits – improves balance, flexibility, and reduces stress.
  • Meditative Practice – mind-body harmony through movement.
  • Martial Roots – includes self-defense principles.
  • Accessibility – suitable for all ages, from beginners to seniors.
  • Cultural Heritage – Taoist philosophy in practice.

How Does Tai Chi Compare?

  • Vs Yoga – both improve health, but Tai Chi includes martial combat roots.
  • Vs Bagua/Xingyi – all internal arts, but Tai Chi is slower and softer.
  • Vs Karate – Karate is external and linear; Tai Chi is internal and circular.

Tai Chi in Europe

Tai Chi has been practiced widely in Europe since the 1970s, both as a health practice and as a martial art. It is especially popular in the UK, Germany, France, and the Netherlands, with many schools offering classes for wellness and martial applications.
