Tang Soo Do

What is Tang Soo Do?

Tang Soo Do (당수도) is a Korean martial art developed in the mid-20th century, blending Karate, Taekkyeon, and Chinese martial influences. Its name means “the way of the Tang hand”, reflecting Chinese roots.

Tang Soo Do focuses on kicks, strikes, and forms, with an emphasis on discipline, tradition, and self-defense. Unlike Taekwondo, it has not become an Olympic sport, which helps preserve its traditional identity.

Why Train Tang Soo Do?

  • Balanced Martial Art – striking, forms, and self-defense.
  • Traditional Discipline – strong etiquette and values.
  • Dynamic Kicks – similar to Taekwondo, but more traditional.
  • For All Ages – family-friendly martial art.
  • Connection to Karate – shared roots, but Korean expression.

How Does Tang Soo Do Compare?

  • Vs Taekwondo – Tang Soo Do is more traditional, less sport-focused.
  • Vs Karate – very similar in structure, but Korean in flavor.
  • Vs Hapkido – Tang Soo Do focuses on strikes, Hapkido includes locks and throws.
